Adoption Requirements
To ensure the successful placement of our pets into loving homes, HSYC has the following Adoption Requirements: follows an evaluation process for all adopters.
- Adopters must be 21 years or older
- All current and past pets must be spayed or neutered, consistently up to date on vaccines, heartworm prevention, sick/well visits
- Vet references are required as part of our adoption application process
For dog adoptions:
- If another dog is living in the home, a meet & greet at the shelter is required
- An in-home visit will be completed as part of the adoption process

At The Adoption Appointment
- You will meet and learn about the pet/s you are interested in adopting
- Complete an application form for the pet/s you wish to adopt
After The Appointment
- The HSYC will confirm with your vet that all current and past pets meet the requirements of being spayed/neutered, are consistently up to date on all vaccinations, heartworm prevention and wellness/sickness checks
For dog adoptions:
- If you currently have another dog in the home, HSYC will contact you to schedule a time to bring the dog(s) in to ensure they get along with your potential new dog
- After a successful meet & greet at the rescue, an in-home visit will be scheduled to ensure the dogs get along in the home environment
Adoption Application Update
- For cats, you will be contacted within 24 - 48 hours about your adoption application
- For dogs, you will be contacted with 24 - 48 hours to schedule either a meet & greet at the rescue if you have dog/s in the home and / or schedule a home visit to ensure the dog & you feel comfortable at home
- If your application is approved, you will schedule a time to pick up your new pet, sign the adoption contract, and pay the adoption fee
Note: Please bring a cat carrier if you are adopting a cat, HSYC provides a leash and harness for all dog adoptions.
Adoption Fees
The adoption fees at the Humane Society of York County are:
- $200 for dogs
- $100 for cats
Our adoption fee covers the cost of spay/neutering, microchips, and vaccinations according to the pet's age, FIV/FeLV (cats) and all monthly preventions as required.
